Thales Alenia Space partners with Airbus for Poland defense satellite

April 20, 2026 10:11 AM

Thales Alenia Space announced an industrial cooperation agreement with Airbus Defence and Space and RADMOR to develop a geostationary defense telecommunications satellite for Poland's Ministry of Defence.

The satellite project forms part of the European Commission's 'Readiness 2030' plan initiated in 2025. The geostationary satellite will provide secure communications for Polish armed forces with cybersecurity features across ground and space segments.

Thales Alenia Space operates as a joint venture between Thales, holding a 67% stake, and Leonardo with 33%. The three partners will combine expertise in military communications payloads, mission control, satellite platform design, and secure ground infrastructure.

The satellite system will incorporate anti-jamming technologies and resistance to threats in what the companies describe as an increasingly contested space environment. The project aims to strengthen Poland's national space sovereignty through end-to-end secure communications capabilities.

"This geostationary satellite project will embody the highest standards of resilience, cybersecurity, and anti-jamming technologies," said Hervé Derrey, President and CEO of Thales Alenia Space, according to the company's statement.

Airbus Defence and Space characterized the partnership as part of cross-border European cooperation for industrial competitiveness. The company noted its existing relationship with Polish armed forces and industry spanning several decades.

RADMOR, operating as part of WB GROUP, will contribute satellite communication capabilities to the project. The company recently expanded into space activities as an extension of its communications portfolio, according to CEO Bartłomiej Zając.

The announcement comes as military organizations increase focus on space-based communications infrastructure for operational connectivity across different domains.
