J.B. Hunt shares rally as cost reduction drives first-quarter profit surge

April 15, 2026 4:37 PM

Investing.com -- J.B. Hunt Transport Services reported a 27% increase in first-quarter (Q1) profit and beat analyst estimates as the trucking and logistics company benefited from cost reduction initiatives and improved productivity across its operations.

Revenue for the quarter reached $3.06 billion, up 5% from $2.92 billion in the first quarter of 2025. The company beat analyst projection of revenue of $2.95 billion. The revenue increase was primarily driven by higher load volumes in Intermodal, Truckload and Integrated Capacity Solutions segments, along with increased revenue per load in certain divisions and improved productivity in Dedicated Contract Services.

Shares of J.B. Hunt rose 2% in after-market trading following the results.

J.B. Hunt Transport reported Q1 earnings per share of $1.49, $0.04 better than the analyst estimate of $1.45.

"I'm thankful for our team and their unwavering focus on operational excellence, even as we navigated challenging winter weather and elevated demand across the business," said Shelley Simpson, president and CEO. "We began the year with strong financial results, building on the momentum we established in 2025 and once again executed well in safety performance by setting a first-quarter record."

The company's consolidated operating income as a percentage of gross revenue increased year-over-year, benefiting from higher revenue, cost reduction initiatives, improved productivity, and lower equipment-related costs. These gains were partially offset by higher purchase transportation expenses in the ICS and Truckload segments and increased fuel expenses.

Net interest expense decreased approximately 4% from the first quarter of 2025, primarily due to a lower average consolidated debt balance and lower average interest rate. The effective income tax rate improved to 25.2% from 26.5% in the prior-year quarter.

The company said it expects its 2026 annual tax rate to range between 24.0% and 25.0%.
