60 Degrees Pharma makes malaria drug available on telehealth platform
60 Degrees Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: SXTP) announced that ARAKODA, its weekly malaria prevention medication, is now available for purchase through the Runway Health telehealth platform.
The arrangement allows U.S. travelers to consult with licensed healthcare professionals online who can determine prescription eligibility and have the medication delivered before departure to malaria-endemic regions.
ARAKODA contains tafenoquine and received FDA approval in 2018 for malaria prevention in adults aged 18 and older. The medication requires once-weekly dosing after an initial loading phase, offering an alternative to daily malaria prevention drugs.
The drug carries several contraindications including glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, breastfeeding when infant G6PD status is unknown or deficient, history of psychotic disorders, and hypersensitivity to tafenoquine or related compounds.
Common adverse reactions include headache, dizziness, back pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, elevated liver enzymes, motion sickness, insomnia, depression, abnormal dreams, and anxiety. The medication has a 16-day half-life, which can delay onset of side effects.
Malaria remains a health risk for travelers visiting regions of Africa, South America, Asia, and Oceania where transmission occurs. ARAKODA is also commercially available in Australia under the brand name KODATEF.
The information is based on a company press release statement.
