Microsoft plans Cheyenne datacenter expansion on 3,200 acres

April 14, 2026 2:07 PM

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) announced plans to purchase approximately 3,200 acres in Cheyenne, Wyoming, for datacenter development. The expansion includes two parcels: 200 acres in Bison Business Park and 3,000 acres in Southeast Cheyenne, both located southeast of downtown.

The company described the announcement as the beginning of a multiyear planning and development process that will include public hearings. Microsoft has operated datacenters in Cheyenne since 2012.

"Since the development of our first datacenter in 2012, Microsoft has been working to strengthen, not strain, the community of Cheyenne," said Bowen Wallace, Corporate Vice President, Datacenters-Americas Region.

Microsoft has committed over $68 million in off-site infrastructure improvements across Cheyenne, including roadway, storm sewer, trail, and municipal water infrastructure projects. In 2025, Microsoft datacenters contributed over $11 million to the Laramie County tax base and ranked as the top taxpayer in Cheyenne and second in Laramie County.

The company stated it will pay directly for all infrastructure upgrades and power procurement necessary for its operations through the Large Power Contract Service tariff with Black Hills Energy. Microsoft said this arrangement protects base retail customers from rate impacts.

The expansion is expected to create construction jobs for thousands of skilled tradespeople and hundreds of full-time positions in information technology, security, and maintenance. Microsoft operates a Datacenter Academy in partnership with Laramie County Community College, which has trained over 1,000 students since 2019.

Since 2018, Microsoft has donated $4.7 million to 28 local organizations through 56 community projects. The company currently employs over 220 full-time workers in Cheyenne.
