Delta to pass $2.5 billion fuel cost surge to customers amid Iran war

April 14, 2026 1:20 PM

Investing.com -- Delta Air Lines will spend an additional $2.5 billion on jet fuel this quarter due to the Iran war, with the carrier planning to pass those costs on to customers, Chief Executive Officer Ed Bastian said Tuesday.

The airline's fuel prices have doubled in the past month, Bastian said via videoconference at the Marsh Aviation Summit in London.

"We have to find ways to get that cost passed through to consumers," Bastian said. "It won't happen overnight."

Delta is considering temporary halts to unprofitable routes and studying whether it can defer some spending and capital expenditure plans, Bastian said.

The comments come nearly a week after Bastian said the airline was making capacity reductions of about 3.5% from levels planned at the start of the quarter. The carrier is also looking to implement additional fare increases beyond what has already been applied, he said then.

Bookings across the network for the second quarter and summer were strong, and Delta's premium-focused strategy was providing some protection against the rising fuel costs, Bastian said during the April 8 earnings call.
