Roblox launches age-based accounts with expanded parental controls

April 13, 2026 8:15 AM

Roblox Corporation (NYSE: RBLX) announced two new age-based account types for younger users that will launch in early June. The company will introduce Roblox Kids accounts for users ages 5 to 8 and Roblox Select accounts for users ages 9 to 15.

The new account system will automatically assign users to age-appropriate accounts based on Roblox's age-check technology or parent verification. Users with Roblox Kids accounts will have access limited to games with Minimal or Mild content maturity labels that pass a three-step selection process, with all communication disabled by default.

Roblox Select accounts for ages 9 to 15 will access games with content maturity labels up to Moderate that meet selection criteria. Default communication settings for this age group remain unchanged from current policies.

The platform will automatically transition users between account types as they age, moving from Roblox Kids to Roblox Select at age 9, and from Roblox Select to standard accounts at age 16.

Games available to users under 16 will undergo additional evaluation including developer ID verification, real-time user interaction analysis, and content maturity rating. The company will exclude games featuring sensitive issues, social hangouts, or free-form drawing by default.

Roblox reported that over 50% of global daily active users and 65% of U.S. daily active users have completed age verification since the company began requiring facial age checks for chat access earlier this year.

The update extends parental controls to allow game blocking and chat management through age 15, plus a new feature enabling parents to approve specific games not available under default account settings.

Later this year, Roblox plans to transition to the International Age Rating Coalition framework for content ratings, which provides region-specific ratings such as ESRB in the U.S. and PEGI in Europe.
