Plug Power wins 275 MW electrolyzer contract for Quebec ammonia plant

April 2, 2026 7:01 AM

Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG) received a Front-End Engineering Design contract to supply a 275 MW GenEco PEM electrolyzer system for Hy2gen Canada Inc.'s Courant project in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, according to a company statement.

The electrolyzer system will support production of low-carbon ammonia using electricity from the Hydro-Quebec grid. The ammonia will be processed into renewable ammonium nitrate for mining industry explosives.

Hy2gen is developing the Courant project as a decarbonized ammonium nitrate facility to serve mining operations in Quebec, Central and Eastern Canada. The facility will utilize Canada's hydroelectric resources and port infrastructure.

Plug's scope includes engineering and system design activities for electrolyzer integration, plant configuration, and performance optimization. The company stated this represents one of its largest electrolyzer project awards.

"Being selected as the electrolyzer supplier for Hy2gen's Courant project underscores Plug's ability to support large-scale hydrogen and hydrogen-derived products," said Jose Luis Crespo, President and Chief Executive Officer of Plug Power.

"This collaboration combines Hy2gen's project development expertise with Plug's electrolyzer technology to enable a green chemical project producing low-carbon ammonium nitrate for Canada's mining industry," said Cyril Dufau-Sansot, CEO of Hy2gen.

The project builds on previous collaborations between the companies on renewable hydrogen projects in Europe and ongoing hydrogen supply arrangements. Hy2gen AG, based in Germany, operates renewable hydrogen and methane production facilities and has a project pipeline comprising 3.4 GW of electrolysis capacity in planning and construction.
