Kala Bio hires Dr. Saeid Babaei to review clinical assets
Kala Bio Inc. (NASDAQ: KALA) announced the engagement of Dr. Saeid Babaei as Senior Scientific Advisor to evaluate the company's clinical and molecular assets, according to a press release statement.
Dr. Babaei will assess Kala's clinical data and development options, including the company's MSC Secretome platform, using AI-enabled analytics and digital health tools. His role includes advising on clinical development considerations and evaluating potential responder subgroups.
The Toronto-based clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company plans to review historical datasets, trial protocols, and translational hypotheses to inform future development and potential partnering opportunities. Chief Executive Officer Avi Minkowitz stated the company will undertake "a rigorous review of our data to evaluate whether amended indications or revised development strategies may merit further consideration."
Dr. Babaei brings over 28 years of experience in healthcare and life science companies across genomics, diagnostics, and oncology. He has overseen more than 25 strategic transactions and raised over $50 million. He currently serves as Chairman and CEO of Virotek Biosciences and is a Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Schulich School of Business, York University.
The engagement focuses on Kala's work in the MSC secretome space, which involves bioactive molecules and extracellular vesicles secreted by mesenchymal stem cells. Industry analysts project the mesenchymal stem cell market to grow from approximately $5.1 billion in 2026 to $9.1 billion by 2031.
"KALA Bio has assembled a meaningful scientific dataset that warrants a careful and structured reassessment," Dr. Babaei commented.
