March 31, 2026 3:32 AM

Nokia announced it has been selected by Virgin Media O2 for a multi-year 5G Radio Access Network deployment and modernization program across the UK. The agreement expands more than two decades of collaboration between the companies.

Under the contract, Nokia will supply its AirScale RAN portfolio, including ultra-capacity modular baseband and Massive MIMO radios. The deployment aims to support Virgin Media O2's Mobile Transformation Plan through improved spectral efficiency, coverage, capacity, and throughput.

The technology will include Nokia's GigaSite architecture, Dual-Band Massive MIMO, and AI-enabled baseband platforms. Nokia's equipment is designed to provide energy-saving software features and optimized spectrum utilization for the UK telecommunications operator.

The partnership will extend to joint innovation programs, including pilots and proofs of concept exploring advanced RAN intelligence, automation, and energy-efficient architectures. This contract continues Nokia's role as one of Virgin Media O2's primary RAN partners.

"We are delighted to deepen our longstanding partnership with Virgin Media O2 through this important new 5G RAN deal," said Mark Atkinson, Head of RAN at Nokia. "Our AirScale portfolio is designed to deliver the performance, efficiency, and flexibility required for the UK's future connectivity needs."

"Nokia remains a key strategic partner in helping us deliver reliable connectivity to our customers," said Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2. "This new agreement allows us to accelerate our 5G rollout, improve performance, and ensure we meet growing demand for high-quality mobile services."

The information was disclosed in a company press release.
