US and Israel strike Iran nuclear sites

March 27, 2026 1:16 PM

Investing.com -- The United States and Israel bombed multiple nuclear targets and steel facilities in Iran on Friday, as Tehran launched strikes across the Persian Gulf and rejected President Donald Trump's demands to end the conflict.

Friday's airstrikes hit a heavy water research reactor at Iran's Arak nuclear complex and a yellow cake production plant in Yazd province, along with two of the country's largest steelmakers, Iranian state media reported.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the country's military would escalate its assault on the Islamic Republic in response to attacks on civilians.

Tehran fired drones and missiles at Gulf neighbors, damaging two ports in Kuwait and triggering missile alerts in Doha. The country warned of retaliation against steel plants across the Gulf and Israel. Saudi Arabian authorities reported intercepting drones and missiles aimed at the capital Riyadh.

The attacks followed Trump's decision to push back his deadline for Iran to agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face strikes on its power plants. The 10-day extension marked his second since Saturday's threat to destroy the infrastructure if Tehran did not reopen the waterway. Global energy and commodity shortages have mounted as the critical chokepoint remains closed.

Trump said talks with Iran are going "very well" and that the American war effort is "ahead of schedule."
