GlobalFoundries files patent infringement suits against Tower Semiconductor
GlobalFoundries (NASDAQ: GFS) filed multiple patent infringement lawsuits against Tower Semiconductor Ltd. in the U.S. International Trade Commission and the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas on March 26.
The complaints allege Tower unlawfully uses GlobalFoundries' patented manufacturing process technologies without authorization. GlobalFoundries seeks injunctive relief to block Tower's importation and sale of products it claims infringe on its patents, as well as compensation for lost profits.
The lawsuits assert infringement of 11 GlobalFoundries U.S. patents covering technologies used in smart mobile, automotive, aerospace and communications infrastructure applications.
"Semiconductor manufacturing is one of the most complex and capital-intensive industries in the world," said Gregg Bartlett, chief technology officer at GlobalFoundries. "Companies that attempt to extract value from patented process technologies without authorization or investment undermine fair competition and the integrity of the semiconductor ecosystem."
GlobalFoundries stated it has invested in domestic semiconductor manufacturing and research for more than a decade. In June 2025, the company committed up to $16 billion in additional U.S. fab investments, including approximately $3 billion for research and development in emerging semiconductor technologies.
According to the press release, GlobalFoundries holds over 8,000 patents while Tower Semiconductor has fewer than 500 patents. The information is based on a company press release statement.
