GE HealthCare leads €50.5M EU consortium for cardio-oncology care

March 26, 2026 8:30 AM

GE HealthCare Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: GEHC) announced its industrial leadership role in the COMPASS consortium, a five-year initiative aimed at improving cardiovascular care for cancer patients across Europe. The consortium received €50.5 million in funding and represents one of the largest public-private partnerships under the European Union's Innovative Health Initiative.

The COMPASS program includes more than 60 partners and focuses on early detection and prediction of cardiotoxicity in cancer patients and survivors. The initiative will utilize artificial intelligence, advanced imaging, biomarkers, and integrated care pathways to address cardiovascular complications from cancer treatments.

According to the announcement, heart-related complications are the second leading cause of death in cancer survivors after the cancer itself, accounting for up to 10% of mortality. The consortium aims to develop predictive models and decision-support tools for personalized care in clinical settings.

"This initiative is well positioned to enable patient-centered cancer care that takes cardiotoxicity risk into account," said Eigil Samset, General Manager of Cardiology Solutions at GE HealthCare and COMPASS Industry Lead.

The program will focus on three main areas: identification of novel biomarkers for cardiotoxicity diagnosis, development of AI-enabled predictive tools, and improved care delivery with enhanced patient engagement. King's College London will provide academic leadership and scientific coordination for the consortium.

The project is co-funded under the Horizon Europe framework as part of the Innovative Health Initiative, a public-private partnership between the European Union and European life science industries. The grant agreement was signed on March 25, 2026, and runs for five years.
