European Parliament votes to advance EU-US trade deal legislation

March 26, 2026 6:36 AM

Investing.com -- The European Parliament voted on Thursday to advance legislation implementing the European Union's commitments under its trade agreement with the United States, with 417 votes in favor, 154 against, and 71 abstentions.

The legislation includes provisions to eliminate EU import duties on U.S. industrial goods and expand access for U.S. agricultural products, which form a central component of the agreement reached in Turnberry, Scotland, last July. The measures also extend zero-duty treatment for U.S. lobsters, a provision initially established in 2020.

The parliament incorporated multiple safeguards into the legislation, reflecting concerns about potential U.S. adherence to the deal amid ongoing uncertainty over President Donald Trump's tariff policies and new import levies.

The Thursday vote does not finalize the legislation. Representatives from the European Parliament and EU member state governments will negotiate the final texts before EU lawmakers conduct a final approval vote, which is anticipated to occur in April or May.
