Emergent BioSolutions secures $60.6 million in smallpox countermeasure contracts
Emergent BioSolutions Inc. (NYSE: EBS) announced it secured approximately $54 million from the U.S. Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response to deliver CNJ-016 Vaccinia Immune Globulin Intravenous for smallpox preparedness. The contract represents an option exercise from an existing 10-year agreement for additional doses of the treatment for complications from smallpox vaccination.
The company also received $6.6 million in orders from an international government partner for ACAM2000 smallpox vaccine to support the partner's biodefense strategy. The orders come from a recurring international customer within Emergent's medical countermeasures portfolio.
CNJ-016 is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treating complications from vaccinia vaccination, including eczema vaccinatum and progressive vaccinia. The treatment is not indicated for postvaccinial encephalitis and carries warnings about interactions with glucose monitoring systems due to maltose content.
ACAM2000 is FDA-approved for active immunization against smallpox and mpox in individuals at high risk for infection. The vaccine carries warnings for serious complications including myocarditis and pericarditis, with suspect cases observed at a rate of 5.7 per 1,000 primary vaccinees.
The announcement follows Emergent's recent execution of multi-year agreements with the Government of Canada valued up to $140 million Canadian dollars, with more than $35 million Canadian dollars in orders expected in 2026.
The information is based on a company press release statement.
