USPS files for 8% price increase on shipping services

March 25, 2026 3:51 PM

The U.S. Postal Service filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission for a temporary 8% price increase on select shipping services, effective April 26 through January 17, 2027.

The price adjustment affects Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select services. First-Class Stamps and other postal products remain unchanged. The Postal Service's Board of Governors approved the change on March 24.

The agency stated the increase addresses rising transportation costs and aligns with industry practices. The temporary measure requires approval from the Postal Regulatory Commission before implementation.

According to the filing, the price change supports the Postal Service's universal service obligation while maintaining financial sustainability. The organization noted that competitors have implemented various surcharges in response to increased operational costs.

The proposed increase represents what the Postal Service described as less than one-third of competitor fuel surcharges alone. The agency emphasized its commitment to providing nationwide mail and package delivery at least six days per week.

Complete pricing information is available on the Postal Regulatory Commission's website and the Postal Service's Postal Explorer platform. The commission will review the proposal before the scheduled April 26 implementation date.

The Postal Service indicated it may evaluate alternative long-term pricing approaches when the temporary increase expires in January 2027.
