MDA Space says Canadarm3 contract unaffected by NASA Artemis changes

March 24, 2026 1:51 PM

MDA Space Ltd. (NYSE: MDA) stated that NASA's announced changes to the Artemis mission will not impact its Canadarm3 program contract with the Canadian Space Agency.

NASA announced it intends to pause the Gateway lunar station in its current form and shift focus to infrastructure enabling sustained lunar surface operations. The space agency plans to repurpose equipment and leverage international partner commitments for lunar surface use.

MDA Space emphasized that its Canadarm3 program operates under a contract with the Canadian Space Agency, not NASA or the U.S. government. The company said no changes have been made to any of its contracts and work on the Canadarm3 program continues.

The Toronto-based space technology company noted that the Canadarm3 architecture was developed with flexibility to support multiple use cases, including operations in low Earth orbit, cislunar space, and on the lunar surface. The system is currently in the design phase, which provides flexibility to adapt to different operating environments.

The company stated it remains in continuous dialogue with the Canadian Space Agency and expects Canada will continue contributing robotics technology to the Artemis mission. MDA Space said it welcomes efforts to accelerate the Artemis mission and views a return to the lunar surface as a market opportunity.

The Canadarm3 contract serves both space agency and commercial markets, according to the company's statement issued in response to NASA's Artemis program modifications.
