Venmo enables global payments through PayPal integration

March 23, 2026 9:04 AM

Venmo announced an expansion allowing users to send money to PayPal users across 90 international markets for the first time. The integration connects Venmo's domestic user base with hundreds of millions of PayPal users globally, according to a company statement.

Users can send money internationally using phone numbers without requiring complex account details or routing numbers. The feature maintains Venmo's interface while enabling cross-border transactions in multiple currencies.

"By bringing these two ecosystems together, we're making it seamless for Venmo and PayPal users to pay one another without friction or borders," said Diego Scotti, General Manager of PayPal's Consumer Group.

The service displays currency conversion rates and applicable fees before transaction completion. Recipients can view sender information, payment amounts in their preferred currency, and payment notes. Venmo is temporarily waiving international fees for the service.

PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL) commissioned survey data from 2,000 Americans showing 59% of payment app users would stop using other apps if one allowed seamless global money transfers. The survey found 49% of respondents had downloaded or switched apps to pay someone back, while 30% forgot to pay someone entirely due to app incompatibility.

The data indicated 41% of Americans send money to friends and family in other countries, with 42% of Generation Z users doing so monthly. Among Americans who traveled or lived abroad in the past three years, 77% said using their preferred domestic payment app internationally was important.

The integration addresses app fragmentation issues that have complicated peer-to-peer payments between users of different platforms. The combined network represents one of the largest peer-to-peer payment systems globally.
