IMAX earns $28 million globally from Project Hail Mary opening weekend
IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) reported $28 million in global box office revenue from the opening weekend of Amazon/MGM Studios' "Project Hail Mary." The film generated $16.4 million domestically for IMAX, representing 20% of the movie's North American debut despite playing on just 1% of screens in the market.
International markets contributed $11.2 million to IMAX's box office results. The company achieved strong market share across key regions, including 34% of the film's debut revenue in China.
"Project Hail Mary" marks IMAX's largest opening weekend for an original title since "F1: The Movie" last year. The film joins a group of twelve titles where IMAX has captured 20% or more of North American opening weekend box office revenue.
The movie debuted in IMAX 70mm film format one week before its global release across sixteen locations in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. These premium format screenings generated $2 million with an average of $122,000 per screen.
Directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord filmed "Project Hail Mary" using IMAX-certified digital cameras. Nearly two hours of the film are presented in IMAX's expanded aspect ratio format.
The film will continue playing across IMAX's global network ahead of Universal Pictures/Illumination's "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" in early April. IMAX's upcoming releases include Disney/Lucasfilm's "The Mandalorian and Grogu" and Universal's "The Odyssey," which was shot entirely with IMAX film cameras.
IMAX operates 1,864 theater systems across 91 countries and territories as of December 31, 2025, according to the company's press release.
