UAE resumes main natural gas plant, LNG plant still shut

March 23, 2026 6:29 AM

Investing.com -- The United Arab Emirates has resumed operations at its largest natural gas processing plant following an attack last week that forced the facility to halt production, according to a Bloomberg report early Monday.

The plant, which is vital for supplying much of the country's natural gas requirements, had been shut down after the attack. The facility's restart comes as energy infrastructure across the Persian Gulf faces ongoing security threats.

Meanwhile, the nation's only operating LNG production plant at Das Island in the Persian Gulf is running at very low levels due to the inability to export via the Strait of Hormuz, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified discussing sensitive information. The 6 million-ton-a-year facility has not been fully halted to allow for a quick restart when the strait reopens, the person said, without providing details on the plant's operating rate.

Energy assets across the Persian Gulf have come under fire in the escalating Iran war, which has forced major producers to reduce oil output and refineries to shut. The conflict has also caused extensive damage at the world's biggest LNG export plant in Qatar.

Attention is now focused on US President Donald Trump's 48-hour deadline for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz or face strikes on power stations. Tehran has threatened to hit back at assets across the region in return.
