Honda to add third production line at India motorcycle plant
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI) will add a third production line to its second plant in Tapukara, Alwar district, Rajasthan. The new line is scheduled to become operational in 2028 with annual production capacity of 670,000 units, according to a company statement.
The addition will bring the total capacity of the second plant to 2.01 million units. HMSI will invest approximately 15 billion rupees to acquire 74,000 square meters of land adjacent to the existing facility to accommodate the expansion.
The new production line will be designed to manufacture 125cc and 160cc scooters and light motorcycles. The expansion is expected to create 2,000 new jobs at the facility.
HMSI's second plant began operations in July 2011 with initial production capacity of 600,000 units, which was increased to 1.2 million units in March 2012. The plant currently has annual production capacity of 1.3 million units after introducing automation technologies since 2023. The company plans to increase the second plant's capacity to 1.34 million units before the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027.
The motorcycle production subsidiary of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. operates four plants in India with combined current capacity of 6.25 million units annually. HMSI plans to increase overall production capacity to 8 million units by 2028 through expansions at multiple facilities.
"The motorcycle market in India has been growing steadily alongside the country's economic growth," said Tsutsumu Otani, HMSI President & CEO. The company currently employs approximately 24,000 associates across its operations.
