BP starts gas production at Quiluma field in Angola

March 17, 2026 6:05 AM

BP plc (NYSE: BP) has begun gas production at the Quiluma field in Angola through its joint venture Azule Energy, according to a company statement.

The field is producing an initial 150 million standard cubic feet per day, with production expected to increase to 330 million standard cubic feet per day by the end of 2026. Azule Energy, a 50-50 joint venture between BP and Eni, operates the project with a 37.4% stake.

The Quiluma field is part of Angola's New Gas Consortium project, which represents the country's first non-associated gas development. Gas from the shallow water offshore field undergoes processing at an onshore facility before delivery to the Angola LNG plant for export.

Other partners in the consortium include Cabinda Gulf Oil Company with 31%, Sonangol E&P with 19.8%, and TotalEnergies with 11.8%, with ANPG serving as the National Concessionaire.

"The safe delivery of the NGC project is another example of bp's strategic progress and demonstrates what strong partnerships and collaboration can deliver," said Gordon Birrell, BP's executive vice president for production and operations.

The partners inaugurated the project's gas treatment plant in Soyo, northern Angola, in November 2025. This startup follows other recent Azule Energy developments, including production that began at the Agogo field in July 2025 and the Ndungu development in February 2026.

BP reported starting seven major upstream projects in 2025, with five completed ahead of schedule, across locations including Trinidad and Tobago, the UK North Sea, Egypt, Mauritania and Senegal, and the Gulf of America.
