March 16, 2026 7:00 AM

Redwire Corporation (NYSE: RDW) announced it received a prime contract from Belgian Defence to build the country's first national security satellite. The mission, designated MATTEO, will provide secure access to space-based services for national defence priorities.

The satellite project is commissioned by the Belgian Federal Government and fully funded by Belgian Defence. Redwire will collaborate with Aerospacelab to develop MATTEO, which will be built in Belgium to support the country's National Defence Industrial Technology Base strategy.

According to the company, MATTEO will enhance Belgium's ability to monitor, protect, and respond to regional and global security challenges. The mission combines Redwire's space mission experience with Aerospacelab's satellite manufacturing capabilities.

"MATTEO represents a significant advancement for Belgium's technological sovereignty and national security, and Redwire is honored to be trusted to deliver on a mission of such strategic importance," said Marc Dielissen, Executive Vice President of Redwire Europe.

A Belgian Defence spokesperson described the project as an in-orbit demonstrator that will allow Belgian Defence to benefit from advanced technology for future space domain capability development. The spokesperson noted the mission will strengthen the national Defence Industrial and Technology Base for the space segment.

Redwire's Belgian facility has over 50 years of experience developing spacecraft platforms and has worked on European Space Agency missions including Proba-1, Proba-2, Proba-V, and Proba-3. The company is also the prime contractor for ESA's Skimsat mission, a technology demonstrator satellite with support from the Belgian government and Ministry of Defence.
