BlackSky commissions fourth Gen-3 satellite in under one week

March 12, 2026 8:31 AM

BlackSky Technology Inc. (NYSE: BKSY) announced it commissioned its fourth Gen-3 satellite in less than one week following launch, making its Gen-3 capabilities available to all global customers.

The satellite provides 35-centimeter resolution imagery and AI-enabled analytics through the company's BlackSky Spectra platform. The commissioning process included establishing communications, verifying system functionality for propulsion, positioning and power, and calibrating the imagery sensor payload and onboard processing systems.

"With immediate additional capacity integrated into live operations, customers experience a pivotal qualitative increase in how they see, understand, and anticipate changes at the tactical edge," said Brian O'Toole, BlackSky CEO.

The Gen-3 general availability allows customers to task daytime, twilight, and nighttime collections. BlackSky's analytics can detect and classify vehicles, vessels and aircraft, and observe pattern-of-life changes over time. The company combines daily Gen-3 monitoring with hourly Gen-2 monitoring capabilities.

BlackSky's rapid commissioning process traditionally takes many months to complete. The Gen-3 constellation has delivered initial images showing vehicles, maritime vessels, aircraft, and individual people with their shadows.

The Herndon, Virginia-based company operates a commercial satellite constellation and provides real-time intelligence services to government agencies and commercial customers. BlackSky owns and operates what it describes as one of the industry's advanced commercial intelligence systems combining its Spectra software platform with its low earth orbit satellite constellation.
