Israel sees no certainty of Iranian uprising despite U.S.-led bombing campaign
Investing.com -- S&P 500 futures edged lower Wednesday following a Reuters report indicating Israel sees no certainty Iran’s government will fall despite the ongoing war.
Israeli officials acknowledged in closed discussions there is no certainty the war against Iran will lead to a collapse of its clerical government, a senior Israeli official told Reuters, with no sign of an Iranian uprising amid the bombardment.
The report noted that despite commentary by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting the war may finish soon, Israel’s assessment is that Washington is not close to instructing an end to the conflict, according to two Israeli officials.
The intense U.S. and Israeli bombing campaign killed the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as senior military commanders, but has also killed civilians and destroyed homes and public buildings. With missiles striking across Tehran and other cities, and Iranian authorities threatening deadly force against protesters, Iranians who might otherwise take to the streets may fear to do so until the war ends.
On the day Israel launched its joint air war with the U.S., Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the action would create conditions for Iranians to take their destiny into their own hands. However, in a Tuesday statement, Netanyahu repeated that while Israel’s aspiration was to help Iranians cast off tyranny, ultimately "it is up to them."
Israel and the U.S. have not issued a joint public statement setting out clear unified war aims or articulating conditions under which they might end the campaign. On Monday, Trump described the war as "very complete, pretty much," but on Tuesday the White House said it would only end when Trump determined its objectives were met and Iran was in a state of unconditional surrender.
