Trump says he’s ’nowhere near’ ordering Iran ground mission
Investing.com -- President Trump said Monday he has not decided to send U.S. troops to Iran’s nuclear enrichment facility at Isfahan, despite reported discussions about such a deployment.
"We haven’t made any decision on that. We’re nowhere near it," Trump told the New York Post in a phone interview from his Trump National Golf Club in Doral, Florida.
The comments follow an Axios report over the weekend that the U.S. and Israel have discussed sending special forces into Iran to secure the country’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. According to four sources with knowledge of the discussions, the operation would target Iran’s 450 kilograms of 60%-enriched uranium, which can be converted to weapons grade within weeks.
Trump also addressed Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who replaced his father Ali Khamenei over the weekend. When asked about his plans for the younger Khamenei, Trump declined to provide details but said he is "not happy with him."
The 56-year-old Khamenei’s succession came after Trump had previously threatened consequences for any successor who assumed power without his input. Trump did not repeat that threat Monday.
Any operation to seize Iran’s nuclear material would likely require U.S. or Israeli troops on Iranian soil and would involve navigating heavily fortified underground facilities during wartime. It remains unclear whether such a mission would be American, Israeli or joint, and would likely only occur after both countries determine Iran’s military can no longer pose a serious threat to the forces involved.
At a congressional briefing Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio was asked whether Iran’s enriched uranium would be secured. "People are going to have to go and get it," he said, without specifying who would conduct such an operation.
An Israeli defense official said Trump and his team are seriously considering sending special operations units into Iran for specific missions.
Preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon is one of Trump’s stated war objectives.
