Coherent launches 700mW uncooled micro-pump lasers for optical networks

March 9, 2026 9:01 AM

Coherent Corp. (NYSE: COHR) announced new uncooled 980nm micro-pump lasers that deliver up to 700mW per fiber output in a compact 3-pin module package. The company released details of the single- and dual-chip devices on March 9.

The lasers are designed for next-generation coherent transmission systems and ultra-high-density multi-rail optical amplifiers. The devices consume less than 3W of power per fiber and operate across temperatures from -20°C to 85°C without requiring active cooling systems.

The new micro-pump lasers target optical networks supporting AI, cloud infrastructure, and high-capacity transport applications. The devices eliminate cooling requirements while maintaining performance levels in space-constrained amplifier designs.

"Coherent has led the uncooled pump laser market for more than two decades, beginning with our first uncooled pump lasers in 2004 and our ultra-compact micro-pump platform in 2017," said Madhu Krishnaswamy, Senior Vice President and General Manager - Telecom Transport Business Unit at Coherent.

Samples of the devices are currently available, with volume production scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026. The company will demonstrate the lasers at OFC 2026 at Booth 1401.

Coherent operates in more than 20 countries and provides photonics technology for datacenter, communications, and industrial markets. The company was founded in 1971 and is headquartered in Saxonburg, Pennsylvania.
