Verizon to build fiber network for AWS data centers under AI deal
Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) announced a partnership with Amazon Web Services to construct fiber pathways connecting AWS data center locations. The agreement, called Verizon AI Connect, involves building long-haul, high-capacity fiber infrastructure to support artificial intelligence applications.
Under the deal, Verizon will provide network infrastructure designed to handle AI workloads requiring high-capacity and low-latency connections. The fiber segments will connect multiple AWS data center locations to support the company's cloud services for customers developing AI applications.
"AI will be essential to the future of business and society, driving innovation that demands a network to match," said Scott Lawrence, senior vice president and chief product officer at Verizon Business. "This deal with Amazon demonstrates our continued commitment to meet the growing demands of AI workloads for the businesses and developers building our future."
Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of AWS Infrastructure Services, said the collaboration will enable high-performance network connections for customers building AI applications across industries.
The companies have previously worked together on multiple initiatives. Verizon uses AWS as a strategic public cloud provider for digital transformation projects, and the companies have developed private mobile edge computing solutions for enterprise customers. Their existing collaborations span manufacturing, healthcare, retail and entertainment sectors.
Verizon reported revenues of $134.8 billion in 2024. The company serves customers worldwide and nearly all Fortune 500 companies from its New York headquarters.
