'How many iPhones could they have flown in through Boeing Airplanes?'....turns out about 3 to 4 weeks worth

April 15, 2025 4:05 PM

Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani reiterated an Outperform rating and $250.00 price target on Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL)

The analyst comments "ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW: Over the last few weeks there have been plenty of questions around AAPL and one of them has been regarding AAPL having flown in multiple Boeing 747s full of iPhones. Question we have gotten is – How many iPhones could they have flown in through Boeing Airplanes? While this may sound like a consulting interview question we think the math around this is fairly straightforward. We think you could squeeze in 1.0-1.2M iPhone units in a Boeing 747 so that would imply the 5 airplanes likely carried around ~6M iPhone units (~3-4 weeks of demand). Though we would stress – AAPL has been building up inventory through less expensive ways over the last 90 days as they manage and look at a host of mitigation vectors against the upcoming tariff issues that don’t appear to be going away. Net/Net: Sticking with our OP rating and $250 price target. The Math Behind The 1.0M Units: A freighter Boeing 747 has a total cargo volume (main deck + lower holds) of ~854 cubic meters. A standard iPhone 16 Pro max box dimensions are - 17.6 cm x 9.6 cm x 3.2 cm, implying volume per box is 0.00054 cubic meters. Assuming these planes were packed last minute ahead of the tariff implementation and, with limited time, were somewhat inefficient (70%), that would imply the truly available space is – 70% of 854 cubic meters = 598 cubic meters. Total number of iPhones per Plane = 598/0.00054 = ~1.1M iPhones. "
