American Airlines (AAL) in discussions with Boeing and Airbus regarding jet purchases - Bloomberg

August 2, 2023 11:21 AM

American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL) is reportedly in talks with Airbus and Boeing regarding an order of at least 100 narrowbody jets to replace some of the oldest aircraft in its fleet, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the publication said the AAL is assessing Boeing's 737 Max and Airbus's A321neo as jets that could replace its aging 737-800, A319, and A320 single-aisle models late this decade.

AAL is said to be looking at a deal size that potentially tops 200 aircraft, with commitments for future purchases.

Bloomberg stated that approximately 255 of the US airline's workhorse jetliners in its fleet are near the two-decade mark, at which point maintenance costs soar.

The negotiations have been ongoing for several months, but the publication's sources warned they aren't yet close to a final decision.
