BMW unveils new electric i5 with 295-mile range
The BMW Group unveiled its new 2024 BMW i5 during a digital world premiere on Wednesday after teasing glimpses of its first all-electric 5 Series for weeks.
As a combustion model, the 5 Series has held a prominent position in the company's lineup since 1972, and it continues to be the second best-selling vehicle for the German automaker behind the 3 Series. It has been known for a while now that BMW has been actively developing an all-electric version of the 5 Series, alongside plug-in hybrids and traditional combustion engine options.
With its unmistakable resemblance to the 5 Series, the i5 confidently embraces the timeless three-box design, featuring a lengthy hood and Hofmeister kink. It effortlessly showcases a contemporary interpretation of BMW's iconic twin headlights and kidney grille, adding a touch of modern flair to its overall aesthetic.
According to BMW, the i5 provides an equivalent amount of interior space to its ICE counterparts in the 5 Series, thanks to the placement of the low-profile battery in the underbody. However, there is a slight difference in trunk capacity, with the i5 offering 17.3 cubic feet compared to the 18.4 cubic feet found in traditional models.
At launch, BMW will offer two distinct all-electric options for the i5. Potential buyers can opt for the single-motor rear-wheel drive i5 eDrive40 or indulge in the high-performance M60 xDrive model, positioned as the flagship of the entire 5 Series lineup.
Both variants are powered by a high-voltage battery with a usable capacity of 84.3 kilowatt-hours.
The battery enables a driving range of 295 miles for the i5 eDrive40 on standard 19-inch wheels or 256 miles for the i5 M60 xDrive. The range ratings are estimated by BMW based on the EPA's test procedure standards.
A notable new feature on the upcoming electric i5 is BMW's optional Driving Assistance Professional package, which includes Highway Assistant. With this feature, i5 drivers can go hands-free and let the car do the driving at speeds up to 85 mph, as long as they keep their eyes on the road and the conditions allow it.
The new all-electric i5 models will be be built at Plant Dingolfing, BMW’s largest European plant. The global market launch will begin in October 2023 with the all-electric versions and will be followed by plug-in hybrid variants in the US in 2024.
