NTSB Calls out Tesla's (TSLA) Lack of Response to Safety Recommendations
National Transportation Safety Board chair, Jennifer Homendy, sent an email today to Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) CEO Elon Musk. The email is critical towards the company’s inaction to “implement critical NTSB safety recommendations”. The recommendations (H-17-41 and H-17-42) were made 4 years ago following an investigation of a collision between a Tesla Model S and a semi-truck in Florida.
H-17-41 recommends that the company “incorporate system safeguards that limit the use of automated vehicle control systems to those conditions for which they were designed.”
H-17-42 recommends that the company “Develop applications to more effectively sense the driver’s level of engagement and alert the driver when engagement is lacking while automated vehicle control systems are in use.”
Five manufacturers other than Tesla have received these recommendations. Tesla is the only company that has not officially responded to the NTSB.
“You have stated that ‘safety is always the primary design requirement for Tesla.’” Wrote Homendy. “If you are serious about putting safety front and center in Tesla vehicle design, I invite you to complete action on the safety recommendations we issued to you four years ago.”
