Don't Want to Upgrade to Microsoft (MSFT) Windows 10? Too Bad.
If you didn't opt-in to update your Windows operating system to Windows 10, don't worry, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) has you covered.
Reports out Thursday have the software giant downloading Windows 10 to users' computers even if the user hasn't scheduled an update yet.
The U.K.'s Inquirer quoted one of its readers as saying, The symptoms are repeated failed 'Upgrade to Windows 10' in the WU update history and a huge 3.5GB to 6GB hidden folder labelled '$Windows.~BT'. I thought Microsoft [said] this 'upgrade' was optional. If so, why is it being pushed out to so many computers where it wasn't reserved, and why does it try to install over and over again?
On the issue, Microsoft commented, or individuals who have chosen to receive automatic updates through Windows Update, we help upgradable devices get ready for Windows 10 by downloading the files they’ll need if they decide to upgrade. When the upgrade is ready, the customer will be prompted to install Windows 10 on the device.
So, those users that update on Patch Tuesday will end up with a folder containing the OS, which will be ready to install on demand.
Microsoft has caught some flak in the weeks following the launch of Windows 10. Some users noted that the company was utilizing a portion of their Internet bandwidth to deliver the new operating system to other users, which should speed up the process, but could be costly to users that have a monthly bandwidth cap.
Shares of Microsoft are flat early Friday.
