GTT raises forecast for LNG carrier orders through 2035 amid US growth

July 28, 2026 1:22 PM

Investing.com -- Gaztransport & Technigaz SA increased its projection for LNG carrier gas containment system design orders to approximately 550 units for the 2026-2035 period, up from a prior estimate of more than 450, the French engineering firm said in its first-half earnings statement on Tuesday.

The upward revision stems from accelerated investment in liquefaction capacity, particularly in the US, according to GTT Chief Executive Officer Francois Michel. Final investment decisions were made on 84 million tons per year of new LNG capacity last year, followed by another 37 million tons in the first half of this year. An additional 29 million tons of projects received a limited notice to proceed during the same period, he said.

South Korean and Chinese shipyards, along with companies like GTT, are gaining from new LNG export terminal projects spanning from the US to Qatar as Asian gas consumption increases. European LNG demand is also growing due to the shift away from Russian pipeline gas, while US President Donald Trump has been promoting increased exports of the fuel to the continent.

"We have no sign of slowdown in investment in LNG," Michel said in an interview, adding that the trend continues despite the conflict in the Middle East. Michel became CEO of GTT at the start of the year.

The company received 56 orders for new LNG carriers in the first half, bringing its backlog for such ships to 272 units. LNG carriers represent the majority of the company's orders.

GTT plans to announce initiatives to build turnkey tanks for ships that use LNG as fuel, in addition to its existing design work. The company also intends to develop digital offerings to help carriers optimize routes while reducing gas boil-off, Michel said.
