April 27, 2011 12:47 PM EDT
Gainers
  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 3.83 percent to $24.69. Markets lower ahead of FOMC rate decision, expected at 12:15pm today, and subsequent presser from Fed Chief Bernanke at 2:15pm EDT. The CBOE VIX near-term index is nearly 4 percent higher today.

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 0.79 percent to $53.37. Economic data has durable orders, excluding transportation, up 1.3 percent in March, better than the consensus of 1.2 percent, and a swing into positive territory from February. Additionally, crude inventories increased by 6.16 million barrels last week, potentially lowering prices at the pump, and spurring consumer purchases. The ETF is being led by Sears Holdings (Nasdaq: SHLD), which is up 1.6 percent.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.09 percent to $21.18. The ETF hit a 52-week low of $21.13 this morning as investors are waiting for comments from Fed Chief Bernanke this afternoon.

Receders
  • iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) down 1.80 percent to $45.18. Investors are worried about more fiscal tightening in China, which is expected to impact property developers the most. China has already increased lender reserve requirements ten times and interest-rates four times since the start of 2010. The Shanghai Composite is off 4.3 percent from a 2010 high set on April 18th.

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) down 1.35 percent to $78.28. As oil inventories rise on lower demand, prices paid will likely also fall, cutting into profits for energy giants. Additionally, ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) is lower today following its first-quarter earnings miss, shares currently 3 percent lower.

  • iShares MSCI South Korea Index (NYSE: EWY) down 1.20 percent to $67.65. The yen is extending its slide today, as S&P lowered its outlook on Japan's AA- local-currency government debt rating to "stable."
