Notable ETF Movers of the Day 03/30: (FXI) (SPY) (SMH) Higher; (VXX) (XRT) Lower

  • iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) up 0.94 percent to $36.64. Stocks in China are moving higher Friday following strong earnings reports from financials as well as word that the government would also be making an investment in cement capacity.

    The Shanghai Composite rose 0.5 percent Friday.

  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) up 0.37 percent to $140.74. The S&P 500 is melting higher after an early sell-off on select economic data. For February, personal spending rose 0.8 percent while personal income jumped just 0.2 percent. Analysts were looking for an increase of 0.6 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.

    Chicago PMI was 62.2 for March, slightly below the 63.0 percent expected.

    The final University of Michigan sentiment reading for March came in at 76.2, versus expectations of 74.3 and a prior reading of 74.3.

  • Market Vectors Semiconductor ETF (NYSE: SMH) up 0.70 percent to $35.85. Chips moving higher with the market Friday and as firm Canaccord Genuity put out a bullish note for Alera (Nasdaq: ALTR) and Xilinx (Nasdaq: XLNX). Both stocks are leading the ETF today. For more on the note, click here.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 3.43 percent to $16.65. The near-term CBOE VIX is still slightly higher today at least check, though mixed economic data will surely keep the index in positive a negative territory throughout the session as firms look to shore-up books and position themselves for the start of the second-quarter...beginning Monday.

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) down 0.18 percent to $61.65. Retailers being pressured by the office supply sector, which has OfficeMax (NYSE: OMX), Office Depot (NYSE: ODP), and Staples (Nasdaq: SPLS) all lower following sentiment numbers as well as lower personal income gains.
