August 18, 2020 10:04 AM EDT

ST. LOUIS (PRWEB) August 18, 2020

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) today announced a strategic partnership with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) to advance the health of communities and individuals through Lifestyle Medicine's pillar of physical activity. The agreement aligns both organizations' vision to make physical activity assessment and promotion a standard in medical education and clinical practice.

The collaboration will support such activities as joint advocacy for clinical integration of physical activity, joint development of clinical practice guidelines, cross-promotion of initiatives such as ACSM's Exercise is Medicine, joint research, advocacy for exercise as a vital sign, and the joint development and delivery of educational content to health care providers and patients in the treatment, reversal and prevention of chronic disease.

Lifestyle Medicine is the use of a whole food, plant-predominant dietary lifestyle, regular physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connection as a primary therapeutic modality for treatment and reversal of chronic disease.

"ACLM is pleased to partner with ACSM around a very critical pillar of Lifestyle Medicine," said ACLM President Dexter Shurney, MD, MBA, MPH, FACLM, DipABLM. "Physical activity is key to the foundational health and resiliency that COVID-19 has shown to be so lacking in terms of chronic disease levels, especially among vulnerable populations. We look forward on working together with our ACSM colleagues to elevate physical activity as a clinical tool."

"ACSM and Exercise is Medicine are pleased to partner with ACLM to share our science, expertise and clinical resources," said ACSM President NiCole R. Keith, Ph.D., FACSM. "We will work together to promote the powerful effects of regular physical activity on physical, mental and emotional health as an integral pillar of Lifestyle Medicine."

More than a professional association, ACLM is a galvanized force for change.
