Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) is in advanced talks to acquire VMware (NYSE: VMW), the Wall Street Journal reported citing people familiar with the matter.

The two tech giants are discussing a cash and stock deal that could be announced soon as long as talks don't fall apart.

The potential deal comes about six months after Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) spun off its 81% stake in VMware.

Last year, Broadcom unsuccessfully tried to acquire SAS Institute. In 2019, Broadcom acquired the enterprise security business of Symantec for $10.7 billion in cash. In 2018, Broadcom acquired CA Technologies for approximately $19 billion, its first large move into software.
