Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows Phone Makes Huge (Relative) Market Share Gain in February

Is Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone making a huge splash, even ahead of the expected Windows 8 launch?

According to NetMarketShare (NMS), the answer may be "yes." For the month of February, initial data from the research firm suggests Windows Phone had a huge February.

While the overall gain is small -- from 0.29 percent market share in January to 0.41 percent in the current period -- that's a 41.4 percent year-over-year jump.

TheNextWeb noted since the data is small compared with peers Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), even a few outliers might "throw the data off." In addition, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has done a relatively good job of marketing Windows Phone with its new Lumia lineup.

For now, the number is relatively unimportant. After all, iOS ticked from 53.65 percent in January to 60.59 percent in February -- otherwise known as a 6.94 point jump, or 16 times Windows Phone's overall market share. Yikes.
