IMAX (IMAX): "Godzilla vs. Kong" Opening Number Impress as Elon Musk Says 'Most Insane Movie' He's Ever Seen

April 5, 2021 8:32 AM EDT

Godzilla vs. Kong marked the best opening over the weekend in a year after securing $32.2 million over the long weekend in the States.

Over the five-day Easter weekend the film garnered $48.5 million in the U.S. and Canada. Internationally, the movie added a further $71.6 million to its box office haul to increase the total amount to over $285 million.

“The results for Godzilla vs. Kong are absolutely mind-blowing and represent a 'welcome back' of sorts for an industry that has been working its way back from the brink for over a year,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.

IMAX (NYSE: IMAX) said it recorded the best weekend in over a year as Godzilla vs. Kong earned $4.5 million on 284 screens. The company said that over 1,000 domestic IMAX shows were sold-out over the 5-day opening.

IMAX screens accounted for 9.3% of the overall weekend box office domestically despite capacity limitations of up to 25% in North America.

“For anyone who may have doubted the pent-up demand for moviegoing, this performance is yet another sign of just how resilient the theatrical industry can be,” said Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Boxoffice.com.

“It should again send a message to studios that the world’s audiences are hungry for big cinematic releases. If ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ can break out to these numbers in a still-handicapped domestic market with a simultaneous streaming release, imagine what other blockbuster contenders will be able to achieve in the months ahead when given a reasonable window of theatrical exclusivity from day one. A sleeping giant is truly beginning to wake up,” he added.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk was also impressed as he tweeted that the movie is the "most insane movie" he’s ever seen.
