Agile, integrated athenaOne platform enhances workflows and enables higher-quality patient care

WATERTOWN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- athenahealth, a leading provider of network-enabled software and services for medical groups and health systems nationwide, today announced the company and its athenaOne platform have enabled many medical groups and health systems around the country to experience enhancements to their workflows during the COVID-19 pandemic through unique software and technology-enabled solutions, a performance-focused service model, and aligned financial incentives.

A network-enabled, SaaS-based platform, athenaOne generates insights from across 110 specialties and provides an integrated suite of technology to help healthcare organizations improve clinical, revenue cycle, and patient engagement workflows. During the pandemic, athenaOne’s cloud architecture has enabled customers to seamlessly enable certain time-sensitive capabilities, such as telehealth, without disruption to revenue cycle workflows or documentation.

“athenahealth has always been accessible and responsive. When COVID-19 started, we wanted to do follow-up...visits via telehealth and were able to set this up on athenahealth overnight. The athenahealth customer success group helped make that happen," said Ed Corns, SVP of Physician Services at Quorum Health. "Offering telehealth and doing remote documentation became a dire need. athenahealth pivoted quickly to provide these services and gave us flexibility to build telehealth templates into our EMR. We worked with athenahealth to build the telehealth platform on the fly and we've gone from 10 [visits] per month to 20,000 per month using telehealth.”

Quorum Health is just one example of how athenahealth partners with its customers – from its proactive and insightful support through its customer success teams to its incentive-based payment model that ensures a “stake in the result” approach. This customer story also applauds the platform’s overall agility and integration capabilities.

“The pandemic has driven important change across the healthcare continuum. Now, more than ever, healthcare organizations need flexible healthcare IT solutions that can provide both short- and long-term value as they implement streamlined workflows to save lives and provide excellent care to their patients, optimize their operational efficiency to offset financial strain, and set themselves up for success beyond COVID-19,” said Bob Segert, chairman and chief executive officer, athenahealth. “At athenahealth, we are committed to being strategic partners to our customers by aligning our financial incentives with theirs. This alignment gives us a direct stake in our customers’ financial health.”

Recently, athenahealth commissioned IDC to write a Business Value Solution Brief, “Expanding the Value Equation with athenahealth,” that highlights the value that customers derive from athenahealth’s athenaOne platform; its performance-focused service model; and its aligned financial incentives. The brief features user insights from several athenahealth customers who have attributed superior performance and clinical resilience through the COVID-19 pandemic to their adoption of the athenaOne platform.

In the IDC Business Value Solutions Brief, small, medium, and large enterprise healthcare providers describe athenaOne’s customer value. Customers achieved success with athenaOne’s streamlined operational and provider workflows – including:

  • 66% faster recognition of revenue;
  • 9.6% average increase in revenue;
  • 49% more efficient billing/revenue cycle teams;
  • 26% more productive physicians;
  • 22% more productive nurses; and
  • 9X more patients using the portal.

Through transparent and automated workflows in the athenaOne platform, back-office support teams are freed up to better optimize revenue collection, and providers find more time to spend with patients, delivering high-quality care. Providers also cite the benefit of having access to shared data-driven insights, best practices, and learnings from other healthcare providers on athenaOne’s network.

“By partnering with the right vendor and making well calculated, long-term investments, the pandemic's impact can be partially offset while providers find new ways to champion care and humanize experiences. Indeed, the pandemic is reshaping how buyers perceive value and how they differentiate one partner from another,” said Mutaz Shegewi, research director, provider IT transformation strategies, IDC.
