Morgan Stanley analyst, Adam Jonas, highlighted his thoughts surrounding Tesla’s (NASDAQ: TSLA) superchargers sharing, as well as the announced autonomous collaboration between Ford (NYSE: F), Argo AI, and Lyft (NASDAQ: LYFT).

On Tuesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded to a tweet about their proprietary charging connector and announced “… we're making our Supercharger network open to other EVs later this year." With around 1.5 million Tesla vehicles in use, Jonas estimates there are approximately 60 vehicles per supercharger connector throughout Tesla’s global network.

Within Morgan Stanley’s $100 monthly ARPU assumption for Tesla Network Services, Charging accounts for $14/month, driving annual ARPU of $168 or $2,500 of charging revenue over the life of the car.

As the network matures, Jonas believes it is a natural extension to have Tesla help offer EV charging services to the broader EV market, including non-Tesla vehicles.

In a deal announced Wednesday; Ford (NYSE: F), Argo AI and Lyft (NASDAQ: LYFT) will start a self-driving ride-hailing service with Lyft Inc. in Miami and Austin, Texas, later this year. The plan is to begin significantly expanding the initiative in 2023, with a goal of dispatching 1,000 self-driving vehicles in the six metropolitan areas where Argo has been testing, including Washington, D.C.

As far as Jonas has heard, “the relationship between Ford and Lyft is not exclusive and that both companies are able to strike partnerships with a range of other firms in the area of autonomous mobility/ride-share.”

Jonas wrote in his review, “We are optimistic on the technological development of autonomous vehicles but urge investors to allow room in their thinking and modeling for a host of factors such as moral, legal, social and regulatory risks inherent in the roll-out of autonomous vehicles on public roads.”
