CHICAGO (Reuters) - Target Corp (NYSE: TGT) on Wednesday reported a much higher-than-expected quarterly profit after benefiting from a strong back-to-school shopping season and increased online sales, and it gave an optimistic outlook for the all-important holiday period.

The Minneapolis-based retailer's shares, which had fallen nearly 2 percent so far this year, rose 6.4 percent to end at $76.03.

Target (NYSE: TGT) reported Q3 EPS of $1.04, $0.21 better than the analyst estimate of $0.83. Revenue for the quarter came in at $0 versus the consensus estimate of $16.3 billion.
