Lower precious-metal costs add sparkle to Tiffany's profit

(Reuters) - Tiffany & Co (NYSE: TIF) reported an unexpected rise in second-quarter profit as it sold more jewelry in Britain and the upscale jeweler benefited from lower costs of gold and other precious metals.

Total net sales, however, fell 6 percent - the seventh straight quarter of declines. Same-store sales fell 8 percent, steeper than was expected.

Tiffany & Co. (NYSE: TIF) reported Q2 EPS of $0.84, $0.12 better than the analyst estimate of $0.72. Revenue for the quarter came in at $932 million versus the consensus estimate of $934.74 million.

Constant-currency comps fell 9.0 percent, versus a drop of 7.1 percent expected.
