Home Depot (HD) to Test Sales of 3-D Printers (SSYS) (DDD) (SPLS)

July 14, 2014 7:21 AM EDT

Home Depot (NYSE: HD) is planning to make an entry into the 3-D printer segment.

According to Bloomberg, Home Depot will begin selling 3-D printers from Stratasys' (Nasdaq: SSYS) MakerBot unit in 12 locations. Markets will include California, New York, and Illinois.

One rep for Home Depot commented to Bloomberg, It’s a pilot for us to test a potential disruptive technology, and to make sure we are on the forefront of a new innovative product.

Home Depot and MakerBot aren't worried that increased usage of 3-D printers will result in a sales drop over the next 10 years. Consumers won't be able to print out tools made of metal and they will still have to go to the store to get supplies.

On watch today include 3-D printing names like Stratasys, The ExOne Company (Nasdaq: XONE), voxeljet (NYSE: VJET), and 3D Systems (NYSE: DDD). Staples (Nasdaq: SPLS), which began offering 3-D printers recently, is also on watch.
