Free WiFi Slowly Becoming Extinct (FB) (CSCO) (SBUX) (GOOG)

October 3, 2013 3:46 PM EDT
Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) and Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) will expand their relationship this holiday season to get more people signed-up, while getting better exposure for businesses.

The WSJ reports today that customers in over 1,000 coffee shops, malls, and other business will need to use a Facebook password when trying to access WiFi networks. Software on many Cisco-made WiFi routers now has Facebook as the splash page, or the page users first see whe trying to access the network.

Businesses can set-up a location-specific Facebook page and check on whether or not customers like the service based on check-ins and "likes." No information is shared on the networks for those that simply log-in to browse, Cisco said.

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has taken a similar initiative. The search giant inked deal to provide free WiFi to over 7,000 Starbucks (Nasdaq: SBUX) locations this summer, encouraging customers to use Google+ profiles to access the network.

While free WiFi has left some skeptical about security, now those that want to stay private may never get to access the service again. Shares of Cisco, Facebook, and Google are lower Thursday.
