Baidu (BIDU) Affirms 'Baidu Eye' Project; Says Google Glass Comparisons 'Premature'

April 3, 2013 10:28 AM EDT
Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) is ticking higher today as it affirmed previous rumors that it might already be working on a rival to Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Google Glass.

Reuters notes that the device, known as "Baidu Eye" internally, aims to give Baidu a "leg up" in image search and facial recognition. The device would be mounted on a headset with a small LCD screen for users to conduct image and voice searches.

One executive with the firm noted that, while the device is being internally tested, he's not sure whether or not it would make it to commercial launch. He noted that comparisons to Google Glass were "premature."

Google Glass is a wearable computer which augments reality via a see-through heads-up display above the users right (or left, maybe) eye. Audio and live images can be streamed and the device is also able to perform computing functions.

Baidu remains the largest search company in China, capturing well over 70 percent of the market at last check.

Shares are up 0.3 percent Wednesday morning.
