It all comes down to this.
Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) and Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) are on watch today as Coinstar (Nasdaq: CSTR) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) open Redbox Instant to the public.
Coinstar wil issued unlimited streaming for one month and four DVD credits to new users. The service will cost $8 per month thereafter for unlimited streaming and a four-DVD plan. For just unlimited streaming, the cost is $6 per month, lower than the $8 Netflix charges and slightly less than the $6.60 or so per month Amazon charges (given Prime costs $79 for one year).
First announced in February 2012, Redbox Instant was offered on a beta basis to select users last December.
Given that it is a new service, selection won't be as robust as that from Netflix or Amazon. About 4,600 titles are expected to be available at launch.
The service will be available on popular operating systems like Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS, Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT), Blu-ray players, and select smart TVs.
Shares of Netflix and Amazon are indicated higher Friday.
