(Not the New PlayBook)

So far BlackBerry’s (Nasdaq: BBRY) success in the tablet market has been nonexistent, but that doesn't mean it plans to give up on the growing segment. On the contrary, according to comments made by the company’s head of mobile computing David Smith, Blackberry may make another push to grab share.

“We are looking at future tablets, and how we can continue to play in the tablet business,” said Smith. “We are definitely very interested in the tablet market. It’s a challenging market, but I still think people want to see a range of different products.”

If Blackberry follows through on the talk, it will once again come face-to-face with the likes of Samsung and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), competitors that have so far eaten its lunch. Blackberry would also now face completion from Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Barnes and Noble (NYSE: BKS), Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), and others.

Blackberry’s current tablet is called Playbook and it hasn't made much of splash so far, especially in the U.S. Blackberry plans to update the tablet to run on Blackberry 10, its flagship new software that supports its new Z10 and Q10 smartphones.

In Q4 Blackberry sold 255,000 Playbooks compared to Apple’s 22.9 million iPads.

Shares of BlackBerry are up about 1.8 percent Thursday afternoon.
