BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY) debuted its Z10 smartphone in São Paulo on Thursday, promising that the device would be available in Brazil sometime during the first-half of 2013. Pricing also wasn't made available.
Some might question how BlackBerry hasn't hammered-out a set date yet, particularly given that the Z10 is already said to be on sale in Venezuela, according to Brazil's Estadao news source. There's logistical considerations and the like to take into consideration, but while BlackBerry is working to sort out the details, Nokia (NYSE: NOK), Samsung, and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) are likely to debut new products and aim to steal market share. Given Brazil's "emerging market" status, this shouldn't be a segment overlooked by BlackBerry.
Shares are indicated for a lower open Friday. Though still up about 17 percent in 2013, BlackBerry has dropped 24 percent since peaking at an annual high of $18.32 on January 24th.
