Nokia (NOK) Higher; Windows Phone U.S. Market Share Appears In-Line with Expectations

February 6, 2013 3:22 PM EST
Maybe Nokia (NYSE: NOK) investors should be taking a good, hard look.

According to comScore data out today, Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone platform lost about 0.7 points of mobile presence in the U.S. from September through December 2012, now occupying about 2.9 percent of the total market. Initially, this could be bad news for Nokia and Microsoft holders.

But, given that the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III were released months before Nokia's Lumia line, which debuted in November, it might not be such a bad stat after all.

With its latest quarterly report, Nokia said it sold about four million Lumia devices globally. Given that HTC is also selling Windows Phone 8-based devices in the 8X and 8S, it's safe to say that some market share for the operating system was going to slip last quarter. Investors will be looking to the March quarter update -- which will probably be out in May -- for any signs of improvement.

Of course, Nokia will offer a great hint at what's to come when it releases quarterly results in April. Shares are up over 3.5 percent late Wednesday.
